Monumental human efforts were required to plant the vines producing Life from Stone in quartz rock, including dynamite! Springfield Estate

Set in the heart of the mountain-ringed Robertson Valley in South Africa`s Western Cape Province, Springfield Estate is a vibrant, family-run wine farm. It is owned by the Bruwer family, fourth-generation wine farmers and ninth-generation descendants of the Bruères, French Huguenots who came to South Africa from the Loire in 1688 with bundles of vines under their arms. The lime-rich soil on the estate ranges from extremely rocky to clay, with sandy soil next to the Breede River where vineyards are protected against floods by low dikes. The climate in this area can be harsh and extreme. The southeaster blows the ocean air in from the Atlantic over 100 km away and this produces variable summer temperatures of around 30 ºC during the day to 15 ºC and below at night. The lower lying vines, such as those in the Sauvignon Blanc vineyards, are prone to frost during the growing period and a low annual rainfall of around 200 mm means that controlled irrigation is essential to relieve [continues...]

Springfield Methode Ancienne 2004

In terms of quality, authenticity and for giving sheer pleasure this is a masterpiece. The vines planted in 1979 have consistently produced fine wine Only 2. 8 hectares were established on a rock-infested outcrop which bears 17-20 barrels of luscious premium Cabernet Sauvignon, aged for two years in new French oak and a further three years in bottles in the Springfield cellars before being released. Unfiltered and unfined. May require decanting. Alc. 13. 5% [read on...]

Springfield Wholeberry Cab. Sauv. 2011 half Litre

In the time of our ancestors grapes were harvested by hand, carried to the cellars in baskets and placed uncrushed into open tanks to ferment with natural (wild) yeasts into wine. This lost tradition has been re-enacted to produce Springfield Whole Berry. No pumps, no crushers and matured in French oak barrels fo one year. The result is a velvety wine with softer tannins and classical varietal characteristics. It is unfined and unfiltered so a deposit may result. The bottle may need decnting. [read on...]

Springfield Miss Lucy 2016

Miss Lucy is one of seven nicknames given to the Red Stumpnose by fishermen of the Southern Cape. Created as an ode to the bounty of the sea, Miss Lucy is a carefully crafted blend of 38% Sauvignon Blanc, 32% Semillon and 30% Pinot Gris. This wine has been over 10 years in the making. Vines were specifically plante and in a game of trial and error several were uprooted and others replanted in their place. Prior to Miss Lucy's eventual release came a four year period of experimentation with regards to the blending of com[onents and different barrel regimes. The result is a unique blend burst- ing with citrus, melon and pamplemousse flavours and an ample mouthfeel, yet is remarkably moderate in alcohol. It is the perfect partner to a seafood feast. Springfield The Work of Time 2010

To fulfil a yearning to produce a top notch 'Bordeaux Blend' Abri Bruwer planted the classic ingredients - Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot in 1992 on carefully selected sites and took 9 years to reach maturity before the first vintage was produced. The grapes were fermented whole with native yeasts and left on their skins for five weeks. The wine ws then barrel aged for two years followed by four years of bottle maturation. Abri's yearning was realised and the aptly named Work of Time was born. Rich, classic and complex with silky well integrated tannins. It is unfiltered and unfined which may result in a small sediment deposit so the bottle may need decanting. A serious wine that deserves serious food. Note: Vintages 2011, 2012, 2013 were not up to Abri's exceptionally high standards so the next vintage to follow will be 2014 when it is released - eventually! [read on...]
