Protos Bodega

History Protos (greek for `first`) is privileged to have originated in the bowels of one of the Comarca’s most important fortresses, Peñafiel Castle, which dates back to the XI. The castle is currently home to the Wine Provincial Museum with 2000 m2 occupied by exhibit rooms. The Ribera del Duero has a very long history of vine growing and wine making. The vineyards are a prominent feature of the landscape. The customs and the very nature of the local people reflect this long tradition. The oldest known reference to winemaking in the region is a 2000 year old Roman mosaic which was discovered in the village of Banos de Valdearados in 1972. It is the biggest Bacchian allegorical Roman mosaic (at 66 suqare metres) in the entire Iberian Peninsula, and the best preserved. The central character is the god Bachhus, seen taking hold of Adriadne with his right hand embracing Ampelos with his left arm.
