Châteauneuf-du-pape Rouge 03 La Nerthe
Wine; vintage: 2003; Unquestionably a very good vintage at La Nerthe despite the hot, dry summer. The vines are organically grown on steep slopes rising above the Rhône. The vineyards are covered in large white stones which act as a form of `central heating`, storing heat during the day, and warming the vines at night. The wine is made up from four grape varieties principally - Syrah gives ripeness and richness, the Grenache lovely sweet fruit and a good alcohol level, Cuisant finesse and Mourvèdre, which forms one of the most important components like its near neighbour Domaine de Beaucastel, backbone and body. A vintage for earlier drinking.
