Wines By Region
The word wine comes from the Old English win, which derives from the Proto-Germanic *winam which was an early borrowing from the Latin vinum, (which can mean either the `wine` or the `vine`), from Aeolic Greek Fοίνος, (woinos) and from earlier languages such as Hebrew יין (yayin).
Wine producing Regions
Wine grapes grow almost exclusively between thirty and fifty degrees north or south of the equator. The world`s most southerly vineyards are in the South Island of New Zealand near the 45th parallel. However, the world`s most northerly vineyard is Blaxsta Vingård in Flen, Sweden, just above the 59th parallel. As a rule, grapevines prefer a relatively long growing season of 100 days or more with warm daytime temperatures (not above 95°F/35°C) and cool nights (a difference of 40°F/23°C or more).
Wine exporting countries
The 14 largest export nations (2005 dates) – France, Italy, Spain, Australia, Chile, the United States of America, Germany, South Africa, Portugal, Romania, Moldova, Hungary, Croatia and Argentina. California produces about 90% of the wine in the United States. In 2000, Great Britain imported more wine from Australia than from France for the first time in history.
The leaders in export volume by market share in 2003 were:
* France, 22%
* Italy, 20%
* Spain, 16%
* Australia, 8%

The Martinborough area is a valley back-dropped by the Nga-Waka-a-Kupe hills featured on the label. The grapes were picked late in the season with some botrytis to produce a Late Harvest style. Cool fermentation followed by four months on the `lees` (yeast sediment) has produced a wine with balanced acidity, some residual sugar and a good depth of colour. Off dry. [read on...]

Petit Chablis 2008 Geoffroy
Although this is the first level of the Chablis apellation let there be no misunderstanding about the expression "Pitit". It is certainly not representative of it quality. Its bouquet is younge, fresh and vivacious with a whirlwind of fragrant floral and fruit scents. Its flavour is pleasant, lively and fruity with a touch of lemons and green apples and minerals. The finish stays fresh and perfumed. [read on...]

Petit Chablis 2008 Malandes
Petit Chablis is one of the four 'appellations' of Chablis and although Petit in French means small, there is nothing small about this wine. 2008 was an excellent vintage and still retains a fresh, lively bouquet and a fresh lemon, citrus seductive flavour with a touch of minerality. [read on...]

Petnat Rosé Petillant Natural Sparkling
The production of this unusual unique pink bubbly needs som explanation. Produced from 80% Gamay & 20% Grolleau picked in the cool early hours of the morning to protect the quality & fruit. The grapes are kept on the juice at 5øC for 10 days after which the juice is run off & yeast added to start the fermentation, which is slow to protect the fruit. After partial fermentation the wine is bottles into champagne type bottles where the fermentation is continues to 8% when the pressure in the bottle reaches 8 bar, where the process is naturally arrested leaving a natural residual sweetness. The wine then lies on the lees until March when the bottles are emptied into tank under seeb bar of pressure preserving the precious bubbles. It is then filted under pressure & refilled. It has a beautiful pale pink colour, an excellent fine mousse & a most attractive fruity flavour of stawberries, soft red fruits & a delicious crispness with only 8% alcohol. [read on...]
