Wines By Region

The word wine comes from the Old English win, which derives from the Proto-Germanic *winam which was an early borrowing from the Latin vinum, (which can mean either the `wine` or the `vine`), from Aeolic Greek Fοίνος, (woinos) and from earlier languages such as Hebrew יין (yayin).

Wine producing Regions

Wine grapes grow almost exclusively between thirty and fifty degrees north or south of the equator. The world`s most southerly vineyards are in the South Island of New Zealand near the 45th parallel. However, the world`s most northerly vineyard is Blaxsta Vingård in Flen, Sweden, just above the 59th parallel. As a rule, grapevines prefer a relatively long growing season of 100 days or more with warm daytime temperatures (not above 95°F/35°C) and cool nights (a difference of 40°F/23°C or more).

Wine exporting countries

The 14 largest export nations (2005 dates) – France, Italy, Spain, Australia, Chile, the United States of America, Germany, South Africa, Portugal, Romania, Moldova, Hungary, Croatia and Argentina. California produces about 90% of the wine in the United States. In 2000, Great Britain imported more wine from Australia than from France for the first time in history.

Springfield Wholeberry Cab. Sauv. 2011 half Litre

In the time of our ancestors grapes were harvested by hand, carried to the cellars in baskets and placed uncrushed into open tanks to ferment with natural (wild) yeasts into wine. This lost tradition has been re-enacted to produce Springfield Whole Berry. No pumps, no crushers and matured in French oak barrels fo one year. One of the two Kaapzicht flagship wines. Blockbuster of a wine but manages great elegance and finesse too. Terre de Murier Merlot 2015

This Merlot is harvested at full maturity from vines grown on clay-limestone and marls soil. The grapes go through an 18-20 day maceration. After a soft press of the berries the wine is matured in oak vats to let the natural complexity of the terroir reveal itself. The wine offers an expressive nose of liquorice, candied fruits with a hint of vanilla, blackcurrant and spices which transcends to the flavour to blend with smooth, silky tannins. [read on...]

The Foundry Grenache Blanc

The Foundry is a small winery dedicated to producing wines of outstanding quality, purity and authenticity, as this absolute gem bears out. It expresses the small but concentrated crop of grapes harvested in ideal weather conditions experienced in 2010. The perfectly ripe fruit was hand picked before undergoing fermentation in quality French oak casks. where it remained for 7 months before bottling. This excellent vintage has produced floral aromas with hints of lemon cream and white stone fruit. The palate rich with focused pure fruit minerally mid-palate and a long finish with a citrus tang.
