Wines By Region

The word wine comes from the Old English win, which derives from the Proto-Germanic *winam which was an early borrowing from the Latin vinum, (which can mean either the `wine` or the `vine`), from Aeolic Greek Fοίνος, (woinos) and from earlier languages such as Hebrew יין (yayin).

Wine producing Regions

Wine grapes grow almost exclusively between thirty and fifty degrees north or south of the equator. The world`s most southerly vineyards are in the South Island of New Zealand near the 45th parallel. However, the world`s most northerly vineyard is Blaxsta Vingård in Flen, Sweden, just above the 59th parallel. As a rule, grapevines prefer a relatively long growing season of 100 days or more with warm daytime temperatures (not above 95°F/35°C) and cool nights (a difference of 40°F/23°C or more).

Wine exporting countries

The 14 largest export nations (2005 dates) – France, Italy, Spain, Australia, Chile, the United States of America, Germany, South Africa, Portugal, Romania, Moldova, Hungary, Croatia and Argentina. California produces about 90% of the wine in the United States. In 2000, Great Britain imported more wine from Australia than from France for the first time in history.

* France, 22%
* Italy, 20%

Springfield Methode Ancienne Cab. Sauv 06

In terms of quality, authenticity and forgiving sheer pleasure this is a masterpiece. Only 2. 8 hectares of vines were planted on a rock infested outcrop in 1979. The miracle is in the fruit. Tiny berries, intense in colour and flavour and the crop is vinified in the traditional way. No crushing of berries, no yeast but that from their skins, no fining additives and no filters. Only 17 to 20 barrels of luscious premium Cabernet Sauvigon is produced annually. The wine is aged for two years in new, finest quality French oak casks and then matured in bottle for a further three years in the Springfield cellars before being released. This wine has not been fined and bottled unfiltered so as to preserve all the# superb quality and fruit, so decanting is necessary. [read on...]

Springfield Miss Lucy 2016

Miss Lucy is one of seven nicknames given to the Red Stumpnose by fishermen of the Southern Cape. Created as an ode to the bounty of the sea, Miss Lucy is a carefully crafted blend of 38% Sauvignon Blanc, 32% Semillon and 30% Pinot Gris. This wine has been over 10 years in the making. Vines were specifically plante and in a game of trial and error several were uprooted and others replanted in their place. Prior to Miss Lucy's eventual release came a four year period of experimentation with regards to the blending of com[onents and different barrel regimes. The result is a unique blend burst- ing with citrus, melon and pamplemousse flavours and an ample mouthfeel, yet is remarkably moderate in alcohol. It is the perfect partner to a seafood feast.
