Wines By Region
The word wine comes from the Old English win, which derives from the Proto-Germanic *winam which was an early borrowing from the Latin vinum, (which can mean either the `wine` or the `vine`), from Aeolic Greek Fοίνος, (woinos) and from earlier languages such as Hebrew יין (yayin).
Wine producing Regions
Wine grapes grow almost exclusively between thirty and fifty degrees north or south of the equator. The world`s most southerly vineyards are in the South Island of New Zealand near the 45th parallel. However, the world`s most northerly vineyard is Blaxsta Vingård in Flen, Sweden, just above the 59th parallel. As a rule, grapevines prefer a relatively long growing season of 100 days or more with warm daytime temperatures (not above 95°F/35°C) and cool nights (a difference of 40°F/23°C or more).
Wine exporting countries
The 14 largest export nations (2005 dates) – France, Italy, Spain, Australia, Chile, the United States of America, Germany, South Africa, Portugal, Romania, Moldova, Hungary, Croatia and Argentina. California produces about 90% of the wine in the United States. In 2000, Great Britain imported more wine from Australia than from France for the first time in history.
The leaders in export volume by market share in 2003 were:
* France, 22%
* Italy, 20%
* Spain, 16%
* Australia, 8%
* Chile, 6%
* United States, 5%

In this categoryMeinert White Merlot 2009
This is really an unusual rarity - a dry White Merlot! Martin Meinert came across this wine whilst travelling in Switzerland and was introduced to a wine made from Merlot in Italy. He then introduced this to South Africa. Barrel fermented and with the feintest onion skin colour, the flavour is unique. Very fruity, concentrated, flinty, buttery and complex with plenty of character. The finish is long and satisfying. Alc. 12% [read on...]

Saint Veran Grande Reserve 07 Coup de Coeur
Vinification in the finest French oak barrels has added great complexity to this dry white wine. The nose has whiffs of vanilla and hazelnut and in the mouth it is big, powerful with a suggestion of toasted brioche and liquorice and orange peel on the farewell. A real blockbuster awarded the maximum ***and Coup de Coeur by Hachette. Powerful enough to go with most white meas in rich sauces. Fabulous marrage with Coquille St Jacques and Beurre Orange. Muscat de Beaune de Venise Rouge
Very rare, sweet red wine produced from the sparsely grown Muscat Petits Grains grape, big flavour, rich and powerful with raisiny,chocolatey nuances. Chilled it makes a very unusual but delicious aperitif and goes wonderfully well with chicken liver, veal kidneys in Madeira sauce, and most especially chocolate desserts. [read on...]

Gran Araucano Cabernet Sauvignon 03
Produced from very old Cabernet Sauvignon vines near Santa Cruz. The grape bundles are hand-picked into small baskets and rushed to winery so that they don`t suffer any degradation. It has an impressive crimson colour with a bouquet that expresses strong blackcurrant, red fruits and vanilla. The wine is rich on the palate with good tight faint tannins. Certainly an outstanding wine. [read on...]

Moulin Vent Champ de Cour 2008
The biggest and potentially the best of Beaujolais Grand Crû, this wine embodies all the great qualities of this famous wine region. Fine deep ruby with a touch of youthful violet, really good granity earthy Gamay fruit,both chocolatey rich and minerally pure. A powerful meaty wine which although made from 'Gamay, has the distinct 'feel' of a northern Burgundy. This 2008 vintage is an excellent follow to the very fine 2007 vintage. [read on...]
