Languedoc

Languedoc wine (typically labeled ``vin de pays d`Oc``) is produced in the Languedoc region of south-west France bordering Spain to the west and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. Historically of mediocre quality, it constitutes over one third of all wine produced in France and is a major contributor to the surplus known as the ``wine lake``. However, the Languedoc wine industry is experiencing commercial success due to outside investment and an increased focus on quality. Very important to sales has been (1) selling by brand and (2) the labeling of bottles by the variety of grapes used in their production, a practice increasingly demanded by consumers in the large New World wine market. Wines from the Mediterranean coast of Languedoc are labeled as Languedoc, those from the interior have other labels such as Fronton, Gaillac, or Limoux.

Cuvee des Ardoises du Ch. des Earles

Ardoises meaning `slaves`, is the name of the vineyard it is produced from. It is the `second label` of Cháteau des Erles, stretching over 70 hectares and is set in a perfect location amid breathtaking landscapes, overlooking Villeneuve des Corbieres. The Carigan, Grenache and Syrah vines grown to produce this very splendid and special wine are very old. The windy climate provides the vegetation with the right amount of ventilation preventing diseases that thrive in humidity, thus eliminating the use of pesticides. The unique character of each grape variety is respected and with a carefully tailored approach, the very best is obtained out of each part of the vineyard. Several cuvées are produced. This wine is their flagship, their very best, and what an exceptional Fitou it is, reflecting the quality of the `terroir`, and for its outstanding quality it has been recognised as ``the Crû of Fitou`` and is one of the finest wines of Languedoc-Roussillon.
