Bukettraube
This variety, which the South Africans have taken to their hearts as a recent import from Germany, is curiously difficult to identify in the meticulous annals of German viticulture. Galct notes an Alsace variety, Bouquettraube, said to have originated in Wurzburg, whose leaves resemble those of Elbling and whose grapes are slightly Muscat-scented.
This may be the variety of which several hundred hecatres are planted on the Cape, especially in cooler coastal regions. Relatively easy maturing with good sugar and acid levels, it is prized for the aromatic note it can bring to blends and it makes well-balanced medium-dry varietals. Some dessert versions have also done well.
