The Foundry

THE FOUNDRY was established in 2000 by wine maker Chris Williams and James Reid to produce small quantities of excellent wine which would reflect the nature and character of their source vineyards and express the differences apparent in vintages.

Working closely with a handful of growers, fruit is sourced from across the Cape to secure grapes at optimum ripeness from sites which are best suited to each variety. Long-term contracts have been concluded for specific rows of vines to meet The Foundry’s demand for high quality fruit which is expressive of its source vineyards.

Each lot of grapes is vinified separately according to its intrinsic character, taking great care not to over-extract or manipulate the fruit. No recipes are followed and both traditional and modern techniques are used. The aim is to produce wines which the owners will enjoy drinking.

The wines are vinified, bottled and matured at Meerlust Estate in Stellenbosch. From 2010 The Foundry has a new home in the Voor-Paardeberg area. It is our intention to eventually locate all of our winemaking at activies in the Paardeberg, but will still continue to produce the single vineyard Stellenbosch Syrah and Viognier. The Foundry will expand its range to a selection of single vineyard wines from different appelations and terroirs around the Cape, much as the great negotiant houses of Burgundy and the Rhone valley do.

The Foundry Grenache Blanc

The Foundry is a small winery dedicated to producing wines of outstanding quality, purity and authenticity, as this absolute gem bears out. It expresses the small but concentrated crop of grapes harvested in ideal weather conditions experienced in 2010. The perfectly ripe fruit was hand picked before undergoing fermentation in quality French oak casks. where it remained for 7 months before bottling. This excellent vintage has produced floral aromas with hints of lemon cream and white stone fruit. The palate rich with focused pure fruit minerally mid-palate and a long finish with a citrus tang. Awarded a maximum 5* by prestigious Platter in South Africa. Ideal with scallops,Asian and Thai food and fish other than shell-fish. [read on...]
