Groot Eiland Wine

The Groot Eiland Wine cellar is situated in the Western Cape of South Africa, at the foot of the majestic Du Toitskloof mountain range. In view of the many cascading winter waterfalls, this area is well known for its extraordinary scenery, excellent wines, friendly and hospitable people. The unusual name Groot Eiland (big island) comes from the fact that the cellar and its farms are encircled by the water of the great Breede and Molenaars rivers.

The wine cellar, surrounded by its sunbathed vineyards, is located on the banks of these two large meanderings rivers. An average winter rainfall of 650 mm per year results in deep, fertile alluvial soil and lush vineyard growth. The surrounding snow covered mountains of the Du Toitskloof and Bossieveld ranges make for spectacular scenery in winter. Long, extremely warm summers days and superb evenings induce great outdoor entertainment and adventures.

Groot Eiland was established in 1961 with 13 members and now has expanded to 31 members. All have managed to maintain a healthy balance between the vegetative faculty and the yield of their vineyards. The various block competition winners indicates an abundant richness in people who know their vines. The Wine Cellar receives healthy grapes as a result of the deep cool alluvial soils and hence has the ability to produce top quality award winning wines, with characteristically fruity flavours.

Our members now produce upward of 17 000 tons of grapes, with the cellar creating 12 million litres of outstanding wines from these grapes. The favoured cultivars are Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Colombard, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinotage, Merlot and Ruby Cabernet.

Our pursuit of the future of wine making has led to a constant upgrading of our facilities, ensuring our ability to produce wines of exceptional quality, suited to local and international tastes and requirements.

Our growing list of awards bears testament to the commitment and skills of our cellarmaster, and the participation of all the members at Groot Eiland Cellar.
