Chateau Larrivet Haut-Brion

The estate of Château Haut Brion developed out of the Maison Noble d'Aubrion, which in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries was the property of the Pontac family. It was the Pontacs who planted the vineyard and first exported their wine. Haut Brion passed out of the family at the end of the 18th century and the property was to change hands many times until an American financier, Clarence Dillon, acquired it in 1935. The property remained in the hands of the Dillon Family and their company Domaine Clarence Dillon.

The château itself is a charming, turreted affair, parts of which go back to the sixteenth century, and it is well depicted on the label. Part of the vineyard adjoins the château and part lies across the road adjoining that of La Mission Haut Brion. These two now form an oasis of vineyards surrounded by housing. Notably Château Haut Brion is the only château situated outside the Medoc to have been included in the famous classification of 1855. Haut Brion went modern in 1960, when stainless steel vats were installed for the vinification. The chais is well kept and workman like - not as showy as some of the Medoc châteaux.

The wines produced at Château Haut Brion have consistently remained worthy of their status as a Premier Grand Cru Classe and this is widely recognised by connoisseurs throughout the world.
